Frequently Asked Questions

CATHETER INDICATIONS AND MATERIALS

When is a Triple Lumen dialysis catheter indicated rather than a Dual Lumen dialysis catheter?

The physician will determine this based on the patient needs. The Power-Trialysis® Short-Term Triple Lumen Dialysis Catheter is suitable for patients requiring other therapies concurrent with dialysis. The third lumen is completely independent from the two dialysis lumens and is indicated for power injection of contrast media, central venous pressure monitoring and can be used for blood draws and fluid or medication delivery without the need for a separate access.

What are indications for use of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter dialysis lumens?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter dialysis lumens are indicated for use in attaining short-term (less than 30 days) vascular access for hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, and apheresis treatments.

What are the indications for use of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen is indicated for intravenous therapy, power injection of contrast media, and central venous pressure monitoring. The distal lumen can also be accessed for blood draws and infusion of medications. The maximum recommended infusion rate is 5 mL/sec for power injection of contrast media.

Please note that catheter indication for power injection of contrast media implies the catheter’s ability to withstand the procedure, but it does not imply appropriateness of the procedure for a particular patient. A suitably trained clinician is responsible for evaluating the health status of a patient as it pertains to a power injection procedure.

What are the contraindications?

Exceeding the maximum flow rate of 5 mL/sec or the maximum pressure of power injectors of 300 psi may result in catheter failure and/or catheter tip displacement.

What materials comprise the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter connectors for the dialysis lumens (blue and red) are made from Delrin™ polyacetal, the power injection lumen connector (purple) is made from Isoplast™ polyurethane, the extension legs from Tecothane™ polyurethane, and the catheter shaft is made from thermosensitive Bodysoft® polyurethane which softens at body temperature.

The product and packaging do not contain natural rubber latex.

CATHETER PERFORMANCE

What flow rate does Power-Trialysis® Catheter achieve?

The straight and curved extension leg Power-Trialysis® Catheter configurations flows at 400 mL/min with low arterial/venous pressures (less than 250 mmHg). The Alphacurve® Power-Trialysis® configuration flows at 350 mL/min for all lengths with low arterial venous pressure (less than 250 mmHg).

What is the recirculation rate of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

The rate of recirculation of the dialysis lumens is 2% on average in both the forward and reverse directions when tested in vitro.

What are the gravity flow rates for the Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen?

The gravity flow rates for the Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen with 1 meter of water infusion pressure vary by catheter length and are listed in the Instructions for Use.

POWER INJECTION

For how many cycles of power injection was the Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen tested?

Power-Trialysis® Catheter testing included 10 power injection cycles on the third lumen.

What is the maximum contrast injection rate for power injection using the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

The maximum contrast injection rate is 5 mL/sec or the maximum pressure of power injectors of 300 psi. Only the lumen marked “POWER INJECTABLE” should be used for power injection of contrast media.

CATHETER AND KIT OPTIONS

What is the French size of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter outer diameter is 13 French and offers dialysis lumens with high flows and a third lumen for intravenous therapies, power injection of contrast media, and central venous pressure monitoring. The third lumen is 17 gauge and is completely independent and exits distal to the dialysis lumens. The dialysis lumens are large 12 gauge lumens that allow for flows of up to400 mL/min.

Why is the Power-Trialysis® Catheter oval?

The oval shape provides superior kink resistance compared to a round shaft catheter.

In what configurations does the Power-Trialysis® Catheter come?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter is available in both straight and curved extension leg configurations, and Alphacurve® (curved catheter body) configurations.

In what insertion lengths does the Power-Trialysis® Catheter come?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter is available in 12.5 cm (curved extension leg and Alphacurve® configurations only), 15 cm, 20 cm, and 24 cm (straight extension leg and Alphacurve® configurations only), and 30 cm (straight extension leg configuration only).

In what kit configurations is the Power-Trialysis® Catheter available?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter is available in both standard kit and full trays. Full maximal barrier precautions trays are compliant with CDC, IHI, and OSHA guidelines and are designed for bedside placement.

Why is the Power-Trialysis® Catheter suture wing transparent and rotatable?

Transparent, rotatable wing allows for easy visualization and cleaning of exit site.

What is included in the kit/tray to dilate prior to placing the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

Each kit/tray includes an 11-13 Fr. Dualator® Vessel Dilator and a 12-14 Fr. Dualator® Vessel Dilator. Placers should dilate to the largest portion of each Dualator® Vessel Dilator to allow the catheter to more easily enter the tissue and vessel.

PLACEMENT, MAINTENANCE AND CARE

In what veins is the Power-Trialysis® Catheter intended to be placed?

The Power-Trialysis® Catheter is intended to be inserted in the jugular, femoral, or subclavian vein as required.

What is recommended to maintain patency of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter dialysis lumens between hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, or apheresis treatments?

It is recommended that each dialysis lumen be locked with a heparin concentration per institutional protocol. The total volume of each solution must be equal to the internal volume of each lumen. The priming volume is indicated on each lumen.

What is recommended to maintain patency of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter third lumen between intravenous therapy treatments, blood draws, power injection of contrast media, and central venous presume monitoring?

The third distal (purple) lumen should be maintained per institutional protocol for central lines.

Where should the tip of the Power-Trialysis® Catheter be placed?

Placement of the tip is up to the placing physician. NKF K/DOQI guidelines recommend that for acute dialysis catheters placed in the jugular or subclavian vein, the tip be placed in the caval atrial junction or the superior vena cava.

What cleaning agents are recommended for use on the Power-Trialysis® Catheter?

The Power-Trialysis® Dialysis Catheter is compatible with the following agents: Povidone iodine, 0.55% sodium hypochlorite solution, chlorhexidine gluconate 4%, chlorhexidine gluconate 2% solution, dilute aqueous sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bacitracin zinc ointments in petrolatum bases.

WARNING: Acetone and PEG-containing ointments can cause failure of this device and should not be used with polyurethane catheters. Chlorhexidine patches or bacitracin zinc ointments are the preferred alternatives.

Is the Power-Trialysis® Catheter compatible with the StatLock® Catheter Stabilization Device?
