What is recirculation?

Recirculation in dialysis catheters refers to the uptake of blood by the arterial lumen after it has already been dialyzed and ejected through the venous lumen. The ideal catheter should have zero recirculation to maximize the efficiency of the dialysis session.

What is the recirculation rate of the EQUISTREAM® catheters?

The rate of recirculation is less than 2% on average, in both the forward and reverse directions when tested in vitro.

Do the EQUISTREAM® catheters come in straight and pre-curved versions?

Yes. Our pre-curved version is called the Alphacurve® pre-curved catheter configuration.

What material are the EQUISTREAM® catheters made of?

The connectors (blue and red) are made from Delrin® polyacetal, the extension legs from Tecothane® polyurethane and the catheter shaft is made from polyurethane.

Do the EQUISTREAM® catheters have more than one inlet port on the arterial tip?

Yes. With the EQUISTREAM® catheters' arterial tip, blood intake is not limited to one inlet, but distributed around the tip by the two inlet holes - helping to maintain flow if the tip is partially blocked.

Do the EQUISTREAM® catheter standard kits and microintroducer kits come with the AirGuard® valved introducer?

Yes. All kits come with the AirGuard® valved introducer.

What makes the AirGuard® valved introducer so special?

The AirGuard® valved introducer is a "passive" device. This means that physicians do not have to remember to engage the valve during an insertion or to "squeeze" the introducer to prevent air embolism or blood loss.

Do EQUISTREAM® split-tip catheters come with a stylet?

All straight EQUISTREAM® split-tip catheters come with a preloaded stiffening stylet. This hollow-tube stylet stiffens the body of the catheter for easier over-the-guidewire placement. The stylet should never be used without a guidewire.

What cleaning agents are recommended for use on EQUISTREAM® catheters?

The Instructions For Use states that povidone-iodine, dilute aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution, chlorhexidine gluconate 4% or chlorhexidine gluconate 2% are the suggested antiseptics to use. These cleaning agents are for external use only.

Where should the tip of the EQUISTREAM® catheters be placed?

The EQUISTREAM® split-tip catheters are designed to facilitate the placement of the venous and arterial tips at the same anatomical location.

The EQUISTREAM® catheter Instructions For Use states to advance the catheter tip to the junction of the superior vena cava and right atrium or into the mid right atrium.

Are the cuff sizes for the EQUISTREAM® and HemoSplit® catheters the same?
